CME – CleanMobilEnergy

Across North West Europe, cities increasingly invest in renewable energy production and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The control systems for energy generation energy utilisation, energy storage or electric vehicle charging work separate from each other. This is inefficient and costs are expensive.


Electrical vehicle charging generally comes from fossil fuel sources. At the same time, renewable energy sources are inefficiently used because production and demand are not coordinated. This imbalance in the uncontrolled peaks of energy demand and supply results in limited use of renewable energy, as well as high charging infrastructure costs.


The project CleanMobilEnergy will combine various renewable energy sources, storage devices, electric vehicles and controlled energy consumption through one unique smart energy management system. The development of this intelligent Energy Management System (iEMS) will increase the economic value of renewable energy and significantly reduce CO2 emissions.


CleanMobilEnergy will make it possible that renewable energy sources are used locally, so electric vehicles are charged with 100 % renewable energy offered at an optimum price. Relying on electrical energy from the grid will only be expected when prices are high from renewable energy sources, which the iEMS monitors and optimises 24/7.


Therefore, one generic transnational iEMS, will be tailor made to the 4 specific City Pilots, namely Arnhem, London, Schwäbisch Gmünd and Nottingham, these pilots range from small size towns to large cities. The 4 City pilots cover different types of renewable energy sources, storage and electric vehicles as well as different contexts and very different city environments. These pilots were chosen to represent a wide range of city sizes and environments, which are essential to develop a widely applicable system for future implementation across Europe.


The City Pilots do also utilise different state of the art storage media in various environments, which are representative for NWE and are easily replicated to other cities across Europe.


The four CME City Pilots are:

  • Arnhem: medium size city, large renewable energy production, large storage in industrial area;
  • Nottingham: medium size city, large renewable energy production, medium size storage for electric vehicles in a controlled area (depot);
  • London: large city, large renewable energy production at multiple locations and large storage in controlled areas with separate grid (depot).
  • Schwäbisch Gmünd: small city, small renewable energy production and storage facilities in residential area;[<br/>]

Project Objectives


The projects objectives are the following:


CME contributes to a significant reduction of GHG emissions in the NWE urban areas which assists NWE to meet EU 2030/2050 targets.

Smart balancing of supply and demand will increase the efficiency of RES and reduce demand for CO2 intensive energy. For this, CME will develop and pilot an interoperable energy management system (iEMS).

The four City pilots cover different types of RES, storage and EV’s, different contexts (legislative, economic, organisational, and socially) and very different city environments (residential, industrial and controlled area’s like municipal depots). This is essential to develop a widely applicable system for future implementation across Europe.
